Q: What is your name?
My name is Matthew.

Q: When and where were you born?
I was born on May, 15th, 1959. I was born in the city of Dearborn, which is right next to Detroit. It is a famous city, because the world-famous inventor Henry Ford was also born there, and started 'Ford Motor Company' where my parents both worked.
Q: What do your parents do?
My father worked as an engineer, and my mother worked as a secretary at 'Ford Motor Company'.
Q: What do you do?
Now? Right now I am a professor of Theology at Lutheran seminaries in Russia. Сейчас?
Q: How long have you lived in Russia?
I have lived in Russia for two years.
Q: Could you tell us about your parents?
My parents were both born in Detroit, but their parents were born over in Europe. My father's father, my grandfather, was born in Russia, he was a German. And my father's mother was also born in Russia, and she was a German too. My mother's father was born in Austria-Hungary. It was Austria-Hungary at that time, he is a Slovak. And her mother was born in a state of Pennsylvania, but her grandmother, and therefore my great- grandmother, was born in Hungary. So, I have Hungarian, Slovak and German roots.
Q: Do you know anything about your relatives who live abroad?
Yes, right now I know I have, perhaps, one relative remaining in Poland, many relatives in Germany, in the east and in the west. I often visit them, because they speak only German, so, it's a chance for me to speak German with them. And I have relatives remaining in Hungary, and I think a few still in Slovakia.
Q: Mathew, your father is probably seventy years old. Was he in the Army during the world War II?
My father was a sailor in World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific, and at the end of the War was actually over in China, on mainland China. He was about eighteen years old then, when he returned to the United States, and he went to University, Valparaiso University, which is a Lutheran college in Indiana. And he received money from the... what was called the GI Bill.
Q: Could you tell us more about the GI Bill?
Those soldiers, who fought in the War, received money to go to college after serving in the military. So, my father used that money to go to college. And after that he began working at 'Ford Motor Company' in the early 1940s, when the original Henry Ford was still the director and owner of 'Ford Motor Company'. And he worked there for over forty years, and he retired about seventeen years ago.
Q: Did your mother work or stay at home with the children, when you were a child?
My mother was mostly, what we call 'a stay-at-home' mom, which means she helped raise fou children; I have one brother and two sisters And she worked at home until we were all able to go to school. And when my youngest sister was able to go to school, my mother went to work as a secretary at 'Ford Motor Company'. And she worked there for about ten to fifteen years, I think. And then she retired too. So both are what you would call 'pensioners', we would call them 'retired'. They are both retired right now.
Q: You have two sisters and one brother, right? What are they?
My two sisters are both teachers. One sister teaches at a school in Dearborn. The other sister teaches on the west side of the state of Michigan in Grand Rapids2). And she, actually, directs a film- and-video program. She also directs a Local Cable Television Program too in Grand Rapids. My brother works as an economist for Ross Perrot's company EDS3). And he is located in The Renaissance Tower, in downtown Detroit.
Q: Is your family a typical American family?
I had one older brother, my brother was the oldest. I was next, I was 'number two', and then we had two sisters after that. So, it was... For our time it was a more typical American family: four children. Nowadays most Americans have less: about two children per family. For exa
