Karlheinz Stockhausen's Klavierstück VIII is the briefest and conceptually, the simplest, of the works that constitute the composer's Composition No. 4 (1954 - 55/61). Klavierstück VIII's pitch content and other parameters are determined by serial procedures; a dynamic series governs the overall structure of the work. Stockhausen delineates groups of notes by using dynamic characteristics within the group that are distinct from the preceding or following group. The rapid nuance of volume level required of the performer may be understood as part of the composer's translation of the extremely specific degrees of articulation possible in electronic music.

Klavierstück VIII, about one minute and forty-five seconds in duration, was first performed in Darmstadt by Marcelle Mercenier in June 1955. [allmusic.com]
