Karlheinz Stockhausen's Klavierstücke V-VIII, written in 1954 - 1955, culminate in Klavierstück VI, by far the largest in scale of the first eight Klavierstücke. The techniques in Klavierstück VI synthesized from other works include unpredictable \"note clouds,\" keys silently depressed for resonance, and harmonic and dynamic structures from Klavierstück VIII. In addition, Klavierstück VI employs a tempo scale that quantifies a metric flux found in Klavierstück V. This scale is graphed on a separate staff of 13 lines; ascent or descent of the graph indicates acceleration or slowing of tempo, respectively, while a full stop in the graph denotes a pause. This graphic tempo indication ideally allows a more subtle control and a greater contextual awareness of tempo fluctuation. Stockhausen also calls for pedaling, subtle degrees of touch, and resonant tones to vary the \"life of a sound.\" As the performer reacts to these variances along with the fluctuating tempo, the player's visible body movements in live performance become a further parameter of the composition, albeit another unpredictable one.

The second group of Klavierstücke, of which VI is a part, was first performed in its original version by pianist Marcelle Mercenier at Darmstadt in 1955; however, the performance of Klavierstück VI was halted due to audience disturbance. [Allmusic.com]
