Klavierstück IV, for piano (1952)

Karlheinz Stockhausen composed Klavierstück IV in tandem with Klavierstück II as part of his first group of four piano pieces, designated Composition No. 2 (1952-53). The group is strongly influenced by Olivier Messiaen's Quatre études de rythme (1949-50), an important precursor to integral serialism, and contains the sort of textures that came to be described as pointillistic. Stockhausen began composition of the set with the sparse, brief Klavierstück III and followed with Klavierstücke II and IV, which provide a transition to the most complex of the four pieces, Klavierstück I. The last named uses a \"group\" composition technique: as opposed to the use of individual note \"points,\" several notes are given dynamic, directional, and rhythmic characteristics unique to the group. The most distinctive characteristic of Klavierstück IV is its contrapuntal texture, distinguishing it from the chordal sounds of Klavierstück II and the pitch-as-point sound of Klavierstück III. Further, this application of counterpoint shows the results of Stockhausen's study of the music of Webern, the composer most revered by mid-century avant-gardists.
