Karlheinz Stockhausen's first set of four Klavierstücke (1952 - 53) bear the strong influence of French composer Olivier Messiaen. After hearing a recording of Messiaen's Quatre études de rythme (1949 - 50) in 1951, Stockhausen moved to Paris to join Messiaen's composition course.

Klavierstück III was the first of the pieces Stockhausen wrote as part of his first set of Klavierstücke. This piece bears a strong resemblance to Messiaen's etude Mode de valeurs et d'intensités, which assigns dynamic and articulation values to particular pitches and is an important precursor to integral serialism. Klavierstück III is only sixteen bars long, and, along with Kreuzspiel (1951), is one of Stockhausen's first completely serial works. From this starting point, Stockhausen began to develop his own style, which eventually encompassed \"note-group\" composition, electronic and electronic-inspired techniques, and aleatoric elements.

Klavierstück III (as part of the first group of Klavierstücke) was premiered by Marcelle Mercenier in Darmstadt in August 1954. [allmusic.com]
