Klavierstück II, for piano (1952)

Karlheinz Stockhausen's first set of four Klavierstücke (1952 - 53) bear the strong influence of French composer Olivier Messiaen. After hearing a recording of Messiaen's Quatre études de rythme (1949 - 50) in 1951, Stockhausen moved to Paris to join Messiaen's composition course. Klavierstücke I - IV owe much to Messiaen's etudes while making some attempt to move beyond the sphere of those works. The first written of the Klavierstücke, No. III, is the most pointillistic of the set and the most reminiscent of Messiaen. Klavierstück I, the last written, is composed in \"groups\" of notes, while Klavierstücke II and IV may be thought of as transitional. Like its companions, Klavierstück II uses serially determined values for durations and dynamics as well as for pitch sequences. In contrast to the sparse pointillism of Klavierstück III and the contrapuntal style of Klavierstück IV, II is more directly harmonic in texture anc characterized by two- and three-pitch chords throughout its two-minute duration.
