25. School of Emotional Engineering - Falling for Sylvia
School for Emotional Engineering's self-titled release was criminally underrated in 2004, so I'm happy to give them their due here. “Falling for Sylvia” is representative of the School's style as a whole, with beats aggressively mixed to the forefront of the track, sailing over a sea of gauzy guitar and occasional splashes of vocals. The overall effect is one of drowning: the insistent pounding of the drums form the waves that the rest of the elements struggle to overcome, occasionally rising above the surface but always falling back down into the churning ocean. I don't know Sylvia, but falling for her (vicariously, of course) is one of the more exquisite, nuanced experiences you're likely to revisit from 2004. Don't miss it. (Zach Mills)
